Update 8 August 2023: The eruption is no longer active.

Though not active, the eruption site is not a safe area. Visitors must heed warnings from the Icelandic Civil Authorities. For more information on conditions at the eruption site, please visit Safetravel.is.

What was the Litli-Hrutur eruption?

Starting on the 4th of July, a “swarm” of earthquakes occurred in the Reykjanes peninsula. The largest magnitude was 5.2, but there was no danger to people.

Earthquake swarms in Iceland can mean the start of a volcanic eruption, and at 16:40 (4:40pm) on the 10th of July an eruption started near the Litli-Hrutur mountain peak on Reykjanes Peninsula.  Litli-Hrutur is close to the 2021 and 2022 eruption sites of Fagradalsfjall (Geldingadalur) and Meradalir.

This eruption started out much larger than the 2021 and 2022 eruptions. It soon reduced in power and became more similar to the previous eruptions, though it had a heavier lava flow. The eruption lasted until early August, when the lava flow began to slow. On 8 August 2023, scientists declared the eruption was no longer active.

Can people visit the eruption site?

The route leading up to the volcanic viewing area is open to hikers. Even though the volcano is not active, people can still see how the lava has covered the area. Please keep in mind the route to the viewing area can always be closed at short notice depending on conditions at the volcano. Visit Safetravel.is for the latest opening times/closing information.

Though not currently active, the eruption site is not a safe area. Visitors must heed warnings from the Icelandic Civil Authorities and stay in designated viewing areas.

It is important to keep in mind that the hike to the volcanic viewing area is not for everyone. The hiking trail to the viewing area is 20km (12 miles) round-trip and is rated difficult.
