Overlooking Husavik’s colorful harbor, the excellent Whale museum is an absolute must when visiting the area, particularly if going on a whale watching tour in Skjalfandi Bay.

The Whale Museum started at first with a small exhibition on whales. The plan was to see if tourists and locals were interested in experiencing the gentle giants this way. Only three years after its establishment, the popularity of the exhibit made it necessary to acquire a bigger building. The Whale Museum is now housed in a former slaughterhouse and is now one of the most visited places in the north of Iceland, providing 1.600m2 to display whale skeletons of several species and fascinating facts about the whales.

A different perspective

Over 200.000 people have visited the museum since its establishment. We fully recommend that you stop by either before or after going on a whale watching tour. You witness the true size of these giant mammals in a different manner in the museum.
