The Kjarvalsstaðir Art Museum takes its name from the painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval (1885-1972), one of Iceland‘s most influential and recognised artists. The Kjarvalsstadir Museum in Reykjavik celebrates both his work and the paintings and sculptures of well established Icelandic and international artists.

Jóhannes Kjarval’s works are on permanent display at the museum. Overall, the exhibitions at Kjarvalsstaðir focus primarily on paintings and sculptures of the established masters of modern art.

Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval (1885–1972) has a unique place in Icelandic cultural history, as one of the nation’s most beloved artists of all time. He was a legend in his own lifetime, and in the eyes of many he was the archetypal romantic bohemian artist. He is best known for his interpretation of nature and especially the mystical visual world.
