The East Iceland Heritage Museum takes a lively approach to the preserving local culture and traditions. Visitors can enjoy spinning and weaving presentations during the summer months.
The diverse artifact collection includes a restored turf farmhouse and a variety of hands-on items for you to truly experience and understand the region’s past. The folk museum also hosta a café and a small shop selling local Icelandic crafts and arts.

The East Iceland Heritage Museum is located in Egilsstaðir. The region’s inhabitants founded the museum in 1943, and since then its aim has been to collect and preserve things representing the old ways of life, culture and activity. Visitors can discover how East Icelanders in the past lived their daily lives. The museum also hosts a contemporary collection.
The Heritage Museum offers different exhibitions focused on what makes East Iceland so unique and extraordinary. At the moment there are two exhibitions, one about the reindeer, which you can only see in East-Iceland, and the other focuses on the historical old rural community of the region.
