Breidafjordur is a large shallow bay famous for its stunning natural beauty. It has a perfect frame of high and low mountains; most prominent of all is Snaefellsjokull.
Breidafjordur is about 50 km (31 miles) wide and 125 km (78 miles) long. The bay has a spectacular setting consisting of shallow seas, small fjords and bays, and countless islands.
The bird life in the bay is extraordinary rich. Over 50 bird species breed there, especially seabirds and waders. Perhaps the most majestic bird is the white tailed eagle. Without a doubt, Breidafjordur is a paradise for bird watchers. Grey seals and common seals are often seen frolicking in the bay. Additionally, whales visit the bay.
Islands of Breidafjordur
Many of the islands in Breidafjordur are used by locals, but very islands are inhabited all year. The island of Flatey has a hotel that is open in summer, while other islands have summer cottages. Furthermore, many farmers in the area use the islands for harvesting eiderdown.
The Baldur ferry crosses the bay on a daily basis. The ferry ride shortens travel times between the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords region.
Breidafjordur Boat Tours
One unique experience that visitors enjoy is the opportunity to take a “Viking Sushi” boat tour of the bay. The tour gives passengers the opportunity to enjoy views of the islands, seabirds, seals, and maybe even some whales. During the trip, the boat crew lowers a trawl net and brings up shellfish, the Viking sushi. Passengers can enjoy a taste of incredibly fresh seafood such as scallops and sea urchins.
